Or paint them with a brush.

Afaik, the originals were painted when assembled, which can be seen on helmets that have later been taken apart.

exactly. another good technique on that guy's site was to brush the first layer on and then spray. this will save a lot of time while giving the illusion that it was brushpainted.

See thats my point whats the point in having HDPE if your going to overpaint it to get the correct HDPE colour then over paint that in white with the exposed areas etc you may aswell just use a styrene or abs helmet.
Also as far as im aware there are issues with paint adhering properly with HDPE which is why all the originals are flakey surely this under colour would flake aswell ?

I agree. IMO the only point to having HDPE is to have the correct colour. Then you can paint it up and scuff it and it should look fairly close to an original - which would be a nice thing.

btw the originals were sprayed by AA and I think most were already assembled, hence when the ears are removed the reveal bare HDPE patches. However some were assembled minus ears and then sprayed - you can see some of them on the pavement outside sds in the 1976 pics.

BTW with regard to TE's history. He seems to have done the "I quit the hobby, this is the last run I'll ever do. I'm done" on at least 3 occasions, selling his moulds

Only then to re-emerge a few months later with something new - only to bitch about the person he sold his moulds to. I presume he just sells a copy of his moulds (or keeps a copy for himself - i dont know)

Cheers

Jez

Well, anyone can get burned out and then receive praise from people desirous of his work to feel encouraged to do it once again. Singers do that all the time. They make comebacks. I don't see him trying to "one-up" everyone else.

Problem with this is that he sold his molds... which basically equals the singer selling off all his song rights.

Jez - I believe you have seen some originals close up?

I think over in England we use Khaki to refer to a greenish colour, where as TE is using it to refer to a tan or sandy colour.

Were the helmets you saw a green colour or more towards the Tan?

I got the feeling that AA just used the green HDPE or are there actualy 3 different shades of original out there?

Cheers

JR

But is he actually re-entering the business? He says he's just responding to people's requests and is only making 30 of these. That's not high volume (though it may be for one individual). If he has the means of making it accurate, then please, by all means. If he's basing this on an existing helmet he has or a prop, then he probably has a way to make a new mold.

i dont see 30 pieces as low volume really you might consider it low volume if it was an industrial process but its not.
If he had requests to make these HDPE helmets then why not make the helmets for those people that have requested them these helmets are out there to buy so in my eye thats back in business they arent private commisions.

The helmets TE has cast now belong to other owners.

I personally find it funny that some people fall for his "this is the VERY last time" routene which he pulls again and again (and again) :lol

The fact is he'll NEVER leave the hobby as he craves the adoration he gets from it (hence the trooper "expert" moniker) .

It does concern me that he feels he has some "rights" over stormtrooper helmet production, even after he's sold off sets of moulds to the various buyers (e.g. Gino, Cameron O, GF, the list goes on). In addition wasnt there a quation mark over his "rights" to reproduce the lazer scanned fiberglass helmet? The list ogoes on and yet his supporters point the finger at AA but conveniently overlook the dodgy dealing of him?

Black Helmet - Yes Ive seen at least six and would describe it as the English Mlitary Khaki colour so based on a muddy green. Here's a pic I did. Note that there's only one colour as far as i'm concerned although it does look different depending on how your white balance is set on your camera - e.g. in the bottom right it looks waaaay to green

This is very strange, I had the chance to chat with the owner of the TE2 molds and he was thinking to retire from the business soon. He might is thinking to resell the molds to the original owner. they might have some kind of agreement...
