I also had the first impression of it looking ROTS-like. It seems intentionally to be a blending of different Vaders. It was briefly available for $299 for the initial preorders. With the interesting reveal and mount features I was tempted. Might be a good choice for trooping or for letting the kids play with, while keeping the accurate $$$ helmets on the display shelf.

Flat lenses?!

The lenses do look flat (OK, cylindrical), not bubble. There are asymmetries, but some are mirrored. For example, the longer edge of the breath mask is on the wrong side. And features from different helmets are combined. For example, the center strip has the width of ROTJ but the thumb print of ESB (more of a thumb gouge).

This is Prototype 2.0, and certainly the design is constrained to not be too accurate, so that's a given. But it doesn't hurt to point out where some of those inaccuracies are, lest we collectively forget what a completely accurate helmet looks like (unlikely!).

I'm holding out for the licensed release of 100% accurate 3D prints of a 100% accurate 3D model of the ANH helmet which Lucasfilm/Disney most certainly has created and has stored away in some secret digital archive. With all the reference material and talented 3D artists available, it would be quite surprising if this hasn't been done.

Why you need a 3D model when you have the Baker mold available?

They don't have Baker mold. But there are ways to have eyes with more bubble than that. What trips me out is the pervasive fan desire for, let's say, EITHER Esb or Rotj but nothing in between. What if a head had perfect ESB eyes and a perfect ROTJ dome? Just curious as to why this upsets some folks if anyone wants to chime in.

Yes that's what I meant. And that 3D model could be derived from images alone and would have the same shape, surface textures, and colors as the original as we see it onscreen. But its availability could also mark the end of any future high end offerings because its accuracy could not be surpassed. Which is probably why we would not see it as a licensed product release even if that accurate 3D model does exist.

But that aside, whenever a new licensed product is made available, I have to ask myself how does this fit into my collection; what does it bring to the table that's different or new or novel.

If this AVONOS helmet were still available at $299 I would buy it because it does offer new features such as the reveal components and design improvements for fit (which were extremely lacking in past licensed helmets from rubies and DP).

I think mainly because we want to match what we have in our collection to something we can see on screen.

But for fun I'm probably not alone in mixing and matching faceplates and domes to see what they look like. And in one case you need to do that to match an onscreen helmet. Simulating the look of the Hoth invasion Vader, I currently have a ANH faceplate paired with a ESB dome with a Sirius satellite radio dash mount inside to add height and adjustable tilt.
