You are lucky that they carry Testors paint - with Testor's paint, being dissimilar to other brands, you would have to search for an equivalent color... I used burnt aluminum color for the grey highlights on my small scale Vader and it looked fairly good. Also, why would the Valspar paint be in the hobby department? Wouldn't it more likely be in the paint department?

Hmm... not knowing American business practices, but I would assume that if one Wal-Mart has these items that they all should have them... or that you could have your local Wal-Mart order them in. Kick their arses if they won't.

Another thing. STT seems to be down at the moment. It won't load at all here.

Well after a bit of cooling down after lunch I decided to look up the paint posted above through the official Valspar/HOK/KK website. They have store listings and it appears as if they are distributed in just certain stores here and there. I am going to have to drive down to Kissimmee to pick some up. Luckily that is only about 15 miles out of the way so its not so bad. I am going to call ahead just to make sure that the colors are in stock.

They carry the paints in the hobby section because they are designed to be used on small plastic model kits. (Cars, airplanes, etc.) The spray cans are 4oz. and the brush ons are 1oz. bottles.

I want to try to get the black pearl from the above link and get some galaxy gray in the smaller brush on bottle to use in an airbrush. The colors look similar but I want to compare before I commit to either. I'm also going to be looking for the Duplicolor while I am at it just to get another comparison. Then I am going to get over to BMW and ask about the Dolphina color as well.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Oh... okay. Yes, I think I heard something about Valspar coming both as a spray and in a bottle... or something. Haven't really looked into it more, as Valspar doesn't ship internationally.

Picked these up today. I am going to get the Duplicolor on the way home tonight, and hopefully will try to get a lead from BMW this week upcoming on the dolphina. I will try to get the paint tested side by side on a panel and we can see how they compare.

Thanks for doing that, Slashie. I'd love to see the results!

Do post both indoor and outdoor shots!

My BMW center said that they needed the product number to get the proper paint, or a vin number from a car that had the the dolphina as a stock color.

Darthvaderv, if you can get those numbers to me soon it would be great! Thanks!

DELPHIN GRAV BMW CODE 184 (184 is the product Number)

Thats all the info I have on it. They made this up in a can at a special place. As I said my garage can mix it perfectly but I found the ready made spray can to be a fraction dark. It's close though. I'm not positive it's an exact match.

I think you need a specialised paint store to mix the BMW colour for you, BMW themselves are far too fussy on having the vin number and all the other details which are just not obtainable unless you have that car painted that colour, I had the same problem originally. LMK how it goes.

I have them on a disk at work. Only problem is I'm off for a week.

I will try and take a pic and post it though.

Well I called and they do not carry this color here in Orlando. They can special order it but it is $26 and only for a small touch up bottle. The guy was pretty short with me so I dont know what size bottle this is. He pretty much didnt want to give me any details what so ever. I'll try calling out to Cocoa Beach or Daytona tomorrow.

I will not give up!

I went to a Beamer dealership today and found the pricetag was $29.

Incidentally, the A22 Sparkling Graphite Metallic has an extremely fine granularity and looked marvelous on a Series 3 BMW.

Does anyone know if airbrushing products give you finer granularity with the same paint?

The first pic is the BMW code 184 colour that my garage sprayed onto a couple of my masks. The Cking on the right hand side. They did the bottom of the mask as well as the cheeks. They left the top of the mask and blended it in perfectly. They also touched up the other mask all around the front neck area when it cracked. Bare in mind some sunlight is on the masks. Although the colours are slighly inconsistant with each other I asked them why that was. They said they added a fraction more silver in the mix on the CKing as they were trying to replicate it's previous paint job. Good results overall, and with my other helmets they compare very close in terms of paint colour.

Image

Very poorly sprayed by me and just done as a test, this is the ready made can of supposedley the same paint which looks a fraction inaccurate. The BMW dolphina colour is the one on the left. The bottom pic is FORD POLARIS GREY. This is on the right hand side of the picture.

I found either of these colours are pretty good, especially with a good finish which I obviously have not done and just tested. The BMW one is a closer colour than the POLARIS though.
