It means that the cap and back of the helmet has all the dings and bumps of the originals - that it isn't smooth.

There's one for sale in the BM section: http://thepropden.aokforums.com/for-sale-te-esb-movie-sized-stormtrooper-suit-vt1313.html

Thanks SWC, I'm just wondering if its worth the price. I have a huntch its a good deal but hes mentioned it is bumpy. Is this a trait of the TE stuff? He also mentioned he didnt like the material it is made of. Your thoughts?

Well, there were apparently smooth caps and bumpy caps according to TE, who has been in the Archives and has seen both on the original helmets. It's purely a matter of preference.

Some fans paint their helmets in a way that allows the paint to form into to droplets to mimick the look. They'll go as far as to use masking fluid to show paint peeling off of the khaki HDPE to mimick the appearance of the prop.

Since there were variances in the way the stormtrooper helmets turned out -- be it due to fitting, trimming, the way the HDPE and/or ABS plastic was pulled off the buck, etc. -- so there is no "one" way that it appeared whereupon all stormtroopers must conform to it in order to look accurate.

For the most part, I feel the bumps are handsome, but you rarely noticed them watching them on the big screen. The actors were frequently in a state of motion. Or when still, they were in the background.

Heck, one stormtrooper even had no blue stripes on its side tubes. So if you omited it, you could arguably say your helmet is screen-accurate and that it's a repro of "Mr. No-Stripes"!

There is a difference between how a prop looks in real life versus how a prop appeared on a screen (due to the natural optical distortion effect of a movie lens, the lighting on the set, prop dings and damage before filming, etc.) Sometimes fans chose one over the other. Sometimes you get lucky and doing one creates the other.

I must advice that this is not a discussion section, but a gallery section. Please continue any further discussion in the prop section.

Thanks.
