No, don't sand the helmet. Just primer, then paint. Nothing else needed, unless you want to go idealized and clean over accurate and a little rough.

no, not really. I prefer accurate. I just thought it'd help the primer to stick to the surface. How do I remove the release agent best? soap+water, silicone remover, gas, alcohol? I don't want to damage the surface...

I believe people just use soap and water. Though, you could always rub it with household alcohol afterwards, as that wouldn't damage things like a sanding or stronger agents do.

ok. Do you recommend a special brand/kind of primer? Maybe I'd be able to pick that brand up in germany as well...

The originals were likely just painted straight on the raw piece, without primer, but if you are going for a good strong bond, then choose a plastic primer over regular primers. Sorry, don't know any brands, but the best would be to choose a brand and type that matches the paint you are going to use to paint with.

so, months later here it is...my first ever Vader helmet, all done by myself...It's not 100% finished though. The nose area needs some reworking and the black colour is showing through in the nose grooves. But I'm quite pleased how it turned out considering I never ever build something on my own lol :-)

I got the VM/Karo chestbox yesterday and put everything together, quick and dirty. Dome positioning not perfect, armor hinge = ducttape, belt not finished etc...
