So, since laserprinter technology is somewhat based on photocopier technology, it might be that the rod came from an old photocopier from that time period. Eeek. That would be so hard to find.

I am still on the fence with regard to the chest rods being a found item. As with most things in the prop world, I would assume the simplist answer is the correct one i.e. it would be much easier to find something to throw on the chest box instead of having something machined.

But, I have seen reference that indicates the ESB rods were given to a machinist to make, which is why I am on the fence with regard to them being a found item. At least in the case of ESB. It is possible, even if the ESB were machined from scratch, that the ANH rods were found items and they used them as reference in order to make ESB rods. At this point though, who knows.....

It's scenarios like this that make the hobby so much fun!

It would be great if it was proven that the rods are a found item and that they are from a printer etc, but then you would have to explain the indentation (on the top) that is on the original ANH chestbox rod if it were to look like what CD shows in his illustration and they just cut off the extended part on top. Keep in mind that the bottom portion of the rod has no such indentation/groove. It may have been machined using the found item as a template, so to speak. I had heard that there is a model motorcycle kit that has a piece very similar to the ANH chestbox rod, which is where the damper fork part idea came from, but it's unknown if the rod was actually on the real motorcycle. For the life of me I can't remember which kit it was though.

Does anyone have screen caps of the vibro-axe? The rod was used on that prop as well and it doesn't appear that the end of that rod was cut off.

Maybe out of an old computer punchcard machine? They used those a lot in the sixties and seventies. There would have been a bunch of "rollers" inside those things.

Yes, the IBM punchcard machine is a possibility.
