Some pics of my helmet progress. I've had to use flicker.com to upload them since this site isn't letting me for some reason. It looks not bad but i feel i could get it even better so I'm thinking whether to start over again or not.

Looks good, are you gonna paint the eye sockets black?

Not decided on that one yet. Either black or a darker shade of gunmetal grey. :)

Progress on the helmet. I think it looks okay but im going to strip the face mask down and start it over again i know i can get it better this time. The black i used was pearl black on the face mask and gloss black on the dome.

This time i will be paying more attention to sanding and wet sanding so theres no rough bits between the tusks etc. It will be worth it

Hi ive had some trouble with the residue that masking tape and can leave behind it can leave your nice paintwork looking grubby. Does anyone know any good ways of getting rid of the masking tape residue?

Lighter fluid the type used in zippo type lighters, or the stuff they sell at pharmacys to remove residue left by sticky plasters/bandaids.

Wouldn't household alcohol do the trick without risking the paint?

I've used alcohol before with pretty good results.

I thought it would be a good time to update the progress on the helmet. The problem is im getting cracks in the paint that have appeared on the dome. I think its because the primer hasn't stuck to the dome properly and as a result the paint has started to form cracks in it. If anyone has any ideas on the best thing i should do please let me know. Thanks

What brand paint and what brand primer are you using?

Hycote primer

I cant remember exactly the black i used on the dome but it was a Halfords product i recall it being either VW diamond black or Vauxhall black spray paint.

Got any pics of these cracks you're talking about?

Do you have a brand called Duplicolor out there in the UK?

Does anyone know a good masking tape to use? Ive bought tape in the past that ended up leaving tape residue on my paintwork even though the tape was supposed to be the kind that doesn't leave any! Even the slightest bit of residue is noticeable on a newly painted face mask that's black! I will be painting the whole mask with Matt black then masking on the gunmetal as i prefer using the black first for some reason. I just get the feeling of the heavier color going on first then the lighter color on top is an easier approach. Let me know on any recommendations for a good tape that will leave no horrible residue. Thanks

Hi folks thought its time for an update. I think the helmet is coming along nice. Ive still got a bit to go with getting a nice glossy shine and I'm still working on getting all the orange peel away but it's getting there. 1 or 2 more light sands to do to the clear coat and a few more coats of clear and it should be almost there. :thumbsup
