Never heard of maia?

She's me. What would you like to know?

Ya know I've always thought the idea of a Women having common interests
with Men like Sport's, or anything Men love is very rare, But to find a
Women who loves Star Wars and especially Vader.
Wo!! Now that's one Women any Man would love to have..

Maia, Does your BF or Husband know how lucky he is?

All the Women I've dated seem look at me like I'm on Crack if I even
mention I'm a fan of the SW movies.. Needless to say I don't tallk about
that sort of stuff unless it get's serious or it's time to bring her to meet My
Parents and Vader. LOL :)

Anyway back to the Topic..
I believe that there are only four sections.. which means you need a fairly
large piece of fabric (width wise) to start with
I personally had to do 6 because I couldn't find the material at the local
fabric place with the right weave and the right width..
Something to go on My Future Upgrades List

Jesper I still think from the capes I've seen Maia and Kevin make the best
Cape and Robe sets..

Actually, I'm divorced, and the ex hated Science Fiction and barely tolerated Star Wars. I ended up having to send most of my collection into safe keeping with friends after he threw out all of the original toys I had.

Some of the ANH cloaks had 4 panels, but they were made with 72" wide material. That is only made by a few woolen mills and ridiculously hard to find unless you are willing buy and entire run of it (3000m of fabric). The others have 6 panels and were from a narrower, 60" wide wool.

Wow....that's detailed info right down to the weave pattern! You're pretty lucky to have handled/tested capesets from all four movies!

So just to make sure I understand you correctly ESB and ROTJ Capes had 6 panels?

ROTS, ROTJ, and ESB have six panels and are cut in a 3/4 circle cloak pattern. If you have the Vader calendar from a couple years ago, you can see the six panels in the ROTS cloak quite clearly. The poses in that calendar might be a bit fashion modellish (is that a word?), but they are good for looking at construction details.

Here's some of the scans I did which show the cloak the best:

In the last one, four of the six panels in the lining are visible. These match up with those in the wool.

If you are wanting to make your own cloak, the cutting template is here:

Cloak construction:

The ESB hem trim:

The STT is admission by Admin only. We had too many problems with spammers (20+/week) to not put that in place. Normally, accounts are activated within 12 hours, but I am going to my mother's this morning and won't have access to the net until tomorrow night, so there will be a delay until then.

Hi Maia,
Any chances you have time coming up in making any ANH capes. I have been reading all the posts and all this information is soooo interesting. I was just curious. And if you were, how do we get in contact with you to do one. I am in no hurry. If this was mention before and I missed it please excuse the question. I will be checking out the STT soon.

Thanks,
G-man

I missed seeing this post. Apologies for that. I am out of wool right now and waiting for Sept to come around so I can sit down with the local wholesaler and see what they have available. In the past few years, it has been impossible to get the ESB accurate twilled wool without ordering an entire run (2000m) of it - enough to make 220 or so cloaks :eek . I have been able to get the even weave wool in 60" widths without any trouble, and usually buy 200m or so of that at a time. As for the 72" wide wool ... haven't been able to get quotes on that in 5 years so the mill in England which manufactured that might no longer be in business.

If your aren't on the Sith Training Temple, register over there and send me a PM in a few weeks reminding me that you are interested. Start of term is Sept 1, so I may be buried in work for a week or two after that.

M

EDIT: I can make cloaks in whatever style people prefer and as many panels as people prefer. The only real difference is in the time it takes to hand finish them.

Really? I've never seen any pix that show OT capes having six panels...only four.

Do you have any reference pix of OT six panel capes?

From ESB:

ImageImage

A 270 degree cloak (left) and a 180 degree cloak from the back for comparison:

ImageImage

Keep in mind that my dressmakers model is no where near as broad across the back as Dave Prowse is - the draping folds would be fewer and more widely spread out on someone his size. The ESB cloak cannot be a 1/2 circle (180 degrees) based on how it drapes. It is either a 3/4 (270 degree) cut or somewhere in between 1/2 and 3/4, but 3/4 makes the most sense from the point of symmetry, construction, and draping.

The difference is striking between the two kinds.
