Have found a part that could easily be cut and trimmed to make a perfect top of the mouth... then I'll have to get ahold of some 5 mm thick plastic sheets to make up the sides... yeah... this is gonna be fun! :lol

Hehe... I should be in bed by now... 3:54am here... whoops. Damn insomnia. :ac10

Haven't worked at all on this project since my last picture update... basically... I'm unsure how to really tackle this... and I need some material that is easy to work with... will have to look into getting some soon.

Well... I'm off to bed... so have fun! :slp

Now I'm absolutely torn. Should I do a Concept Vader - seems like all are doing those these days - or should I take a stab at the Concept Samurai helmet? (didn't like the look of the sculpted mask, but prefer the look of the concept drawing).

Tough choice... and imo equally challenging.

I've seen art of a Samurai-version of Vader. However, the drawing modifies Vader's face a little too much for my liking. I have books on Samurai armor, and if you were to move into a more historical or Japanese look, there's a certain way to do it, otherwise it doesn't look culturally compatable.

I'd say try to do the concept Vader. Nobody's ever done it before with a Rubie's. It would be what we in the States would call an "Extreme Makeover"!

I kinda like the skull look to the Samurai concept drawing - which was completely lacking in the actual sculpt - as much as I like the insectoid look to the McQuarrie concept drawing.

I really think it would be more satisfactory for me to do the Samurai version than the McQuarrie concept Vader. Just to have something different than no one else has.

It may not be accurate to actual Japanese Samurai armor, but I like the concept enough to try to visualize it in 3-dimensional form.

It's a fascinating concept. Did you do the pencil sketch? It's a great interpretation. Looking forward to seeing the attempt!

No, that is the actual Samurai Concept for the quarter scale armor that will be released in Japan this year: the face was sculpted by none other than Takeya, a very famous guy in the model kit community - responsible for a few Alien kits amongst others, very sought after kits.

I was going to say that the peincil drawing has some resemblance to the styles of the old Japanese woodblock prints, but those are more stylized drawings rather than accurate 3D representations of the real thing.

I looked at the prototype on that link, and the artist's take on the Samurai Vader is nice, but doesn't do it for me. I think that the first time the concept was evoked was in a painting on one of the comics / graphic novels and I think that did a better job capturing the essence of Vader.

This one is a little too stylized and I feel the detailing is excessive, and somehow the elegance of Vader is lost.

Done some sharpening on the other side as well... the tougher side of the two... not yet done enough to be worth taking a picture of it, but already the dome looks so much better... with just sharpening the brow ridges on either side of the center ridge.

Will post a picture once I've progressed a little further. Still haven't figured out how to deal with the center ridge, yet, whether to leave it as is and then build on top of it or file it down in the sides a bit. But the way it is now I feel it is far too wide for what I want to do with it.

Latest picture to see how it fitted with the JediJeffrey facemask. Still think I'll match the DP DLX copy with that face though.
