Although one has to be careful when considering tones versus differences in shading of the gunmetal....an impression which onscreen lighting can create.

I don't know if they would have bothered going to that much trouble for what many at the time thought was a B grade movie, but I suppose anything is possible, perhaps Brian would know?

I think it's how the paint is applied - which determines the density of metallic particles per square inch reflecting and refracting light - in conjunction with the studio lighting. In a previous thread where it was argued whether or not the gray paint reached the very edge of the nose or not, I had explained how you can tell the relative positions of the lighting sources, what the mask picked up, and what the metallic surfaces themselves were reflecting. In this case, the metallic gray of the cheek is reflecting some light onto the side of the nose.

With respect to paint application, if the metallic gray was handpainted thinly over the underlying black, it will appear darker. If you add more paint, it will reflect light more.

This is what makes Vader interesting. He's not only a sculpture but an object of art that has been painted. How it was painted comes into play as well.

Also consider that the mask was first painted black, then the gunmetal brushed on. So as Mac mentioned, where it was applied more thinly, there would be more of the black showing through...and that could also potentially affect the tone.
