Yippieh! My helmet arrived today (JRX ROTJ), apart from one little spot the cast is absolutely clean. I couldn't be more pleased. First some pics of this beauty:

Sadly it has no mounting ring in the dome. :pale

I thought of getting a pipe with the right diameter to connect dome and mask but I guess I need some help and tips how to adjust everything, attach the pvc pipe etc...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Alex

Well, I have the ESB equivalent and the way I did it, then I wrapped a thin layer of tin foil around the masks dome ring and began building up an outer ring in 2-part putty making sure to get an even thickness and not going high enough to go above the masks ring top, and letting it harden. I placed the dome on top to make sure it didn't harden in a shape that would later work against the dome.

Once hardened and making sure it could move freely on the masks dome ring, I applied the next round of putty going beyond the height of the ring and then pressed the dome down on top of it in the right position, so it would stick to the dome and let it harden a little - don't let it harden fully. When you feel it has hardened sufficiently, but it still slightly workable, you pull the dome off gently and make sure nothing sticks to the mask. If everything is looking great, just stick the dome back on and let things dry.

And... then you should have a workable ring mount inside the dome and always have the dome sit in the exact same position every time. Good think to do before this is to study all available RotJ pictures and get the dome to sit right and asking people's opinion by posting pictures and such BEFORE doing any work. It's always such a shame when errors could have been prevented by asking for opinions before doing the work.

Hope that helps a little.

I'm sure others may have other or perhaps simpler solutions.

Freaky! I've never seen black milliput before!

The Terracotta grade is nice and soft, very clay-like, although I use the standard stuff most of the time.

Never tried miliput. How does it work? Is it a two-part product?

Yup Carsten.

It's a 2-part epoxy putty. You get one stick of putty and one of hardener in each pack - just chop equal lengths off with a knife and kneed together well and you're good to go.

The two sticks are slightly different colours, so make sure when you're kneeding them together that the colours blend completely so that you can be sure you have a proper mix. The standard grade milliput sticks are light green and dark green/grey.

..I'd say don't bother with the Superfine White, as the two colours are very similar making it tricky to see when you've blended them.

Sounds familiar to something I have here at home, so that sounds like it's easy to work with. :cheers

Yeah, it's good stuff. No toolkit should be without it

.. you can also moisten it with a little water as the heat from your hands can dry it out while you're working it. Depending on your room conditions it can start curing after about 10-15mins or so and gets awkward to work with, that's the time to mix up some more.

It'll be completely hard after an hour or so, but leave it longer if you're going to sand or cut it in my opinon. (I leave it 24 hours sometimes although that's probably overkill)..

Black is the new white - seriously. Black is the same product as Superfine white.
If standard is mixed correctly, you can get a glass like finish with various grades of wet and dry, then T-cut.
I tend to use the superfine - it just needs a lot of mixing and kneading.

Yeah,
It should stick to the dome. What I do is moisten the surface you are going to need it to stick to and the surface of the putty and it will tend to emulsify a bit and stick.
If it does come loose then you can always epoxy it back into place as it is contoured to the surface it came from.

Let's see if I can manage that with my two left hands... :thumbsup

The pull is very cean, do I have to wetsand the surface before using a primer? I've never painted a surface like that...
