I have seen various posts on different forums all contradicting each other on this subject..and on some of the screencaps it is VERY hard to tell..so I figured I would ask here (pm me if necessary)what is your opinion on the following? ( pics would be a big help :) ):

- nose indent: silver or the same gunmmetal as the rest of the highlights?
-wearers right "whisker" ( the angled area under the main cheek): Black or Gunmetal?
-wearers left "whisker": Black or Gunmetal
-edges of notched nose bridge:Black or Gunmetal?

Yes. They may be. No real fixed consensus on what is right, but at least they are a pretty good, established version that many agreed to at the time they were made. More reference leads to more accurate renditions. Though... haven't seen any new ones presented.

Mac stated, and I seemed to find at least one picture that confirms it, that both whiskers on ANH are silver. The wearer's left one looks black most of the time due to the lighting.

Here is a pic where you can see it pretty clearly.

Shadow. At the very base of the whisker where it intersects with the (viewer's) right mouthwall, there's enough of the paint of the whisker that isn't bathed in shadow. This obviously isn't a silver line painted in of itself, as other screen captures don't support that. This is a continuation of the paint color in the whisker. The metallic particles in paint, mind you, pick up light quite notably, but in the absence of light (e.g. shadow) they can look inert.

Wannab, the trick of the TIE cockpit scenes is watching how the lighting direction changes as the TIE fighter is rolling and such. Here's the same Vader, the same cockpit, but lighting is from beneath instead of above.

Image

Here is yet another example of the Death Star look. As you can see, the initial recess of the whiskers are in shadow, but there is enough at the base of the "V" that is angled forward to where it can pick up frontal light and reflect it back into the camera.

Another shot:

And, lastly, but this isn't screen-used:

But color it as you feel like it. Sometimes it's more fun to reproduce the look of the screen rather than the prop as it appeared in real life. Do whatever works for you. :thumbsup

Thanks so much guys!!!!! I really appreciate it! The area that I really can't tell on is the wearers left cheek..depending on the pic it looks black in some, gunmetal in others..although I am leaning toward the fact that it is gunmetal...

I honestly don't think the right whisker is black. I posted a closeup of that shot you shared earlier on in this thread:

Image

As I explained, it's painted metallic gray; some excess paint got into the right mouthwall. This is not a thin line that they painted into the depth of the whisker, as the screen shots show the thickness varies depending on how much light that inclining surface gets to reflect.

Tantive scene:

Image

Closer to the nose, you can see the incline surface closer to the nose is getting more light, and it shows the metallic gray.

Another Tantive scene:

Image

You can see the silver lining - the excess paint from the inline of the surface is on the right mouth wall.

Death Star scenes:

Image

The lighting is coming in from the upper left. Some of the lighting is getting into the wider surface of the whisker, and now the silver line appears thicker.

This is an interesting shot because there is lighting coming from off camera to the left and right. You can see the excess whisker paint completely, but you can also see it fill the incline closer to the nose.

Image

Here, you see the narrower part of the whisker painted in metallic gray. The wider part closer to the tubes is in shadow.

What about the nose, though? Is it gunmetal gray or silver?

Ok I'm officially confused :lol
What are you guys considering the whisker?
I've always considered it the part just below the cheek..

Seems to be gunmetal rather than the silver style of ESB/RotJ
